Initially, the Jaguar E-Type was not intended to be a replacement for the XK range. However, with the XK140 it was realised that the design, which dated from 1948, was looking a bit tired and an all-new car was the answer, but Jaguar did not have the funds to completely revise the XK shape for the future.
