So yes, it is possible this gun shipped from the factory in 1969. It would not have been earlier than that because the J prefix was first used in 1969. The S&W Standard Catalog puts the serials 241704-700000 between 1915 and 1942. Not a lot of help. They weren't made at an even x-number per year, so extrapolating your serial in that range isn't going to be exact. If the production was relatively linear then I'd guess 1928- ish.

This is a Pre-model 17 K-22 Masterpiece. For old S&W 22's listing it as a model K-22 is adequate for the model number. It should have "Made in USA" or a 4 line trade mark stamp like this one, stamped on the right side over the trigger guard. With a S&W logo on the right or left side just in front of the grips.

In 1958 S&W started using model numbers. Guns like your 38 M&P became known as the model 10. They are the most commonly produced S&W revolver.
