There is no key in the first room. After the first fight, you need to veer left, fight some more, see Minagho run away, and after a couple of fights, find a portal. Could be a bug re-introduced from the Last Sakorians DLC (I don't have it, so that's another potential explanation for why it wasn't there for me.)
