The most common problem is that the shift rod is out of adjustment. It's probably moving too far towards the low gear and when it high it's not locked in all of the way. I am posting the adjustment diagram below. If adjusting it doesn't help you out then you know that chances are there are worn parts in the engine. (Not very common.)

Based upon earlier advice here I set out to adjust the pilot screws out a bit to address some popping at low speed that appeared to start when the warm weather came. I finally got around to do this and have set the screw to 2 1/2 turns out for both carbs. This did seem to help some although didn't completely clear it up.
