The S prefix likely was first used in the 1925-26 era, based on serial number ranges for the non and S prefixed rifles. The HS prefix was used beginning in 1932, until the introduction of the model 39A in 1939.But the 39 was in priduction from 1921 to 1938. Initially serial numbers had no prefix. Then the “S” prefix followed. After that came the HS prefix. so your is in the latter part. If original, your front sight might help narrow it down but there are ni records by year matching up serial numbers. How is the bore and the condition of yours?

From 1962 thru 1968 Marlins rimfire rifles (other than the lever actions) used a two letter date code that was stamped on the barrel. This date code is different than the one already listed, as Marlin rimfire rifles (other than the model 39 series) did not have a serial numbers until required to by law after 1968.
